18th Century James Gillray Set 12 Etchings French Political Satire

This is a complete set of original 12 hand-colored engravings from 1798 into 1799 by James Gillray. A complete set sold at auction at Bonham's, London May 2007 for 3840 British Pounds Sterling, at today's exchange - $6226. These are political satire plates titled with both French and English. All are in good condition with no signs of tears, stains or darkening. The patina is appropriate/ correct for the age and only a few (3) have signs of foxing.... The framing is by Milch & Smalls , 939 Madison Ave., New York. Milch was a well know art dealer and formed a partnership with Smalls in 1912 and remained at that address until 1916 when they moved. All but 3 pieces have the original framers label on the back. The frames are all in good condition. The are delicately framed with Lemon Gilt liner stock and done in an elegant 19th Century style. The patina of these frames is lovely and appropriate. Each frame has 1 small hole on the center of each side to affix to the wall for mounting with brass brads. I believe that this is the original form for hanging. .. Each piece is glazed with black and gold reversed painted eglomise glass, again giving the richness of early 19th Century designs. Many of the black areas have almost bubble like spots and a few have small losses of the black. Unfortunately, #3 and #11 glasses are cracked. These could be replicated by a good framer. Several of the pieces are somewhat loose ( etchings and glass need to be re - tacked into their frames) with only tape holding in place. ..............................................................................................................................................
